California proposes millions to make firefighter hand crews permanent

KRCR NORTHSTATE, Calif. — Governor Newsom is setting aside millions of dollars for the permanent addition of firefighter hand crews.

His recent May Revise proposes $46.8 million in 2024-25 and $44.5 million in 2028-29 for vegetation management and fuel reduction, as well as firefighter hand crews. The funding would make permanent five existing temporary Cal Fire Type 1 hand crews, which includes both year-round and seasonal staff.
