Calforests Applauds Legislative Passage of AB 706

Bill creates a practical path to put forest biomass to productive use and strengthen wildfire resilience

SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Calforests applauds the California Legislature’s passage of Assembly Bill 706 (Aguiar-Curry), the Forest Organic Residue, Energy, and Safety Transformation (FOREST) and Wildfire Prevention Fund Act. The measure now heads to Governor Gavin Newsom for consideration.

California has made meaningful investments in wildfire prevention, forest health, and post-fire recovery, but a critical challenge remains: finding reliable, economical outlets for the woody material removed from the landscape. Hazardous-fuel reduction, restoration, and recovery projects generate millions of tons of dead trees, damaged timber, small-diameter material, brush, and other forest residues that often have little traditional market value. Without sufficient utilization infrastructure, that material may be piled and burned, left to decay, or remain as fuel for future wildfires.
