David A. Bischel Forestry Scholarship
About
This scholarship honors the memory of David Bischel, a distinguished professional in the forest products sector. Dave was an alumnus of both UC Berkeley and UC Davis, and a Registered Professional Forester. He began his career as a field forester for the Fibreboard Corporation in Truckee and later served as the forestry manager for the Southern Pacific Land Company in Mt. Shasta. Dave's career progressed as he became the Executive Officer for the Foresters Licensing program, and subsequently, the Executive Officer of the California Board of Forestry and Fire Protection. In this role, he played a crucial part in developing significant changes to the Forest Practice Rules, emphasizing water quality and the protection of fish and wildlife.
In 1995, Dave became the President of Calforests, a position he held for 22 years until his retirement in 2017. Throughout his career, he was a passionate advocate for active forest management and promoted sound forest practices in various forums, including serving as the past president of the California Licensed Foresters Association, organizing forestry tours for policymakers, participating in legislative panels, and presenting before regulatory boards and commissions. Dave was also deeply involved in his local community. He passed away on April 25, 2019.
To honor Dave Bischel’s contributions and commitment to the forest products sector, The Forest Foundation and the California Forestry Association have established the David A. Bischel Forestry Scholarship Program. This scholarship will be awarded to a student who exemplifies Dave’s passion for forestry and active management to promote sound forest principles.
